Moments: June 2023
June has flown past! Where has this year gone so far?
The past few months have been busy at work, so its been a less of a priority for me to write these posts. I haven’t really had the words to write in a long form, so the April and May posts have been left by the way side. I’ve still been posting images on my social media pages, so do have a flick through and see where I have been.
It’s been a trip along the coast, as the sunnier weather comes in the opportunities on our beaches are better. The woodlands are starting to grow and get filled with ferns and bracken, making compositions few and far between.
Here is a few moments from the month just past.
Britten’s coast, Aldeburgh
A sunrise on the Suffolk coast, the perfect way to start a day. With the sound of the waves lapping the shore, swifts darting around overhead and the cool breeze from the sea. What more could you ask for? As I work on the coast from time to time, I get to see its beauty in snippets of time when I go and visit. Not alway a long as is needed. So I took the opportunity to go and capture Aldebrugh, and the valerian that lines the beach. In full bloom it add so much to the browns and russet tones of the shingle. The pink and red tones of the valerian flowers juxtaposed with the old abandoned boats, ode to the feeling that nature slowly wins. I love the way it brightens up the beach the coastline is so much better for it.
As the sun started to rise I worked my way along the coast, with a view capture the beach and the conditions. I started to look how to include the boats, the old fishing huts and the other parts of the beach. Its allowed me to really look at the local area more. It has set up some ideas for observation ready to capture the local area for work too.
Wandering Woodbridge
A usual walk around Woodbridge before heading into work, brought a few opportunities to capture the river Deben. As I walk the same route, it s all about looking at the same compositions I have taken previously . The conditions are always different, so its a lesson in observation. understanding the weather forecast can be key, as I will often make my mind up on my drive in. I started doing this walk as an intentional moment, as I will often work right through when I’m in the office. over the past few weeks, the sunnier weather has brought more life to the shore. more boats, wildlife and people walking along the river.
Along the River Alde
It’s one place, that I will never tire from visiting. As I have been going there for years, the chance to explore this stretch of river in very different conditions. So peaceful and calm, this place is good for letting your worries go away. Without many sounds from outside world just the estuary birds, wildlife and wind for company. A large expanse of water, one of the most interesting places to see the sunrise.
Sometimes the light just hits differently. The glow and reflection across the river Alde, as the sun rose above the horizon. The canoes, places ready for exploring the area from the water. The adventure awaits, those who are willing to take it.
Landguard Point
We headed out to Landguard point, it was an early morning, with sunrise at its earliest a few days before. A location that does benefit from the higher tide, heading towards the old jetty my idea was to try and recreate an image I had taken before. Although, I did stop off on my way to capture the cranes of the port with the higher tide.
Trying to re-create an old image. As the last few occasions, it’s been not high enough tide to try it. The shot is all about anticipation and catching the waves with the ebb and flow of the tide.
The conditions were slightly different, with the sunrise to the north, lighting the old jetty. I prefer the older image, because of the drama in it. But it’s always good practice to look at capturing older compositions, to improve or to capture the location changing. I fully recommend as a way to look at how to improve from the past.
2024 Calendar
It’s calendar time again and the 9th year I have produced, the working title for this years is Exploring the East, with images from Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk. It’s been a labour of love to go on a bit of a tour over the past year to capture East Anglia.
